Gilkinson's Dairy Farm

One of the first trips that Erie Explorers went on last May was to Gilkinson's Dairy Farm in Wattsburg. A year later, it's still being talked about as one of the kids' favorite, so we're going back! Explorers will get the very unique opportunity to see a family-run diary farm at milking time. They'll also get to try milking the cows themselves! There are baby cows to feed, barn kittens galore, silos and tractors to sit on. Don't miss this wonderful peek into farming, the serene landscape of the fields and the chance to talk with some great folks about their time old profession.

Lincoln Metal

This week we will take a tour of Lincoln Metal. This is a facility that preps all things metal to be shipped to a recycling center where the metal gets melted and used again. How do they prepare the metal for shipment? Crash, smash and bash! We will see big things crushed and baled.

There are some rules for this trip. Although we don't assume we will get dirty, prepare for such an event. We will be touring a scrap yard after all. Along that same vain for safety's sake there will be no opened-toed shoes allowed. Join us for a smashing good time!

I will check and see if we can bring our own metal recyclables. We may even receive some money back from them.

Presque Isle

Beachy Keen!

Pack your picnic baskets, beach toys and don't forget the kids! We are heading for the beach (duh). I would like to have some type of sand building extravaganza where we could create an Erie Explorer's village! If relaxing is more your style then that is fine also. I don't know what specific beach at the moment but will pass this along when we decide on one. It goes without saying that this will be a guarded beach.

If there are any recent storms at the time of this outing the swimming advisories will be taken into consideration and may be another reason why we would need to use the rain date. After all why go swimming if you can't swallow a little lake water? It kind of takes the fun out of things!

Date/Time
Tuesday, July 29nd, 2008 10:00am ( rain date : Thursday, July 31, 2008)
Location
Presque Isle State Park

Goodell Gardens

Goodell Gardens in an official Monarch Watch site. They are part of the nationwide system that tags and tracks the migration of monarch butterflies. Heather, the education director, will share a story about butterflies with our group. We will learn about butterfly gardens, raising caterpillars, and tagging butterflies.

If all goes well, I will also have collected enough monarch caterpillars and milkweed plants to send at least one home with each family. You will need a container to transport your caterpillar home. Bring an empty terrarium or container with holes in the cover. You can even make one there by bringing along an empty 2 liter bottle and an empty deli container.

Remember to pack a picnic lunch. Goddell Gardens will allow us to use their newly renovated barn for a picnic lunch afterwards.

Horse Farm - Van Dee Stables

The trip for Tuesday, August 12, 2008 will be a visit to Van Dee Stables. We will take a tour and learn about the care of horses. (Note: we do not expect to be riding horses. The stable owners board other peoples' horses, they do not keep their own.)

Dry Gulch

This is another return trip from last year. Dry Gulch gives you an opportunity to dig for "gems", arrowheads and other types of stones. Each child is given a velvet bag. They can keep everything they can fit into the bag. The area where the children dig is shady, cool and fenced in. We will then have lunch in their covered picnic area. Those of us who went last year will highly recommend this as a trip not to be missed. It's a really great time and a good way to cap off the summer. Again if I have missed anyone in this e-mail please let them know, thanks.
