Art with Your Erie Explorer

To begin the program the children studied the sculptures on display in the lobby of the Frame Shop. All of the sculptures were based on animals that can be found at the Erie Zoo (the orangutan family, the gorilla, the pot bellied pigs, etc.) Led by Stephanie and Kelly the children tried to imitate the body positions and expression on the faces of the scuptures.

Then we headed upstairs to continue our morning with an art-making experience. The children used coiled wire dipped in paint to create line paintings. Then they had to use their imagination to figure out what the picture could be.

Our next stop was exploring the art gallery. It was filled with works by Brian Pardini. Mr. Pardini uses driftwood found on the beaches of Lake Erie to create sculptures. His works were amazing! They included people, animals, even monsters made of driftwood. The children stretched and positioned themselves to imitate the driftwood scuptures while the parents attempted to make drawings of the children in action. It was lots of fun.

Finally, the children were each given pieces of driftwood and the task of trying to figure out what it could be. Emma saw an ear and an ear drum in her piece. David found a 3-eyed monster. Frank's piece became a dog and Megan had a treehouse. Then Kelly used the children's ideas in an interactive story with hand motions about a curious little rabbit.

It was one of our best adventures yet!
