Gilkinson Dairy Farm

We learned:

  • Farmers milk their cows twice a day, 12 hours apart - once in the morning and once in the evening.
  • On average, a cow will produce 6-7 gallons of milk each day.
  • Cows eat about 100 pounds of feed each day, which is a combination of hay, grain and silage. They drink a lot of water too – up to 50 gallons a day.
  • Farmers grow grain and silage to feed their cows year-round.
  • Tractors are really cool!
  • Barn cats are fun!

More Cow Facts

  • When a Holstein cow is milking, she weighs between 1,100 and 1,500 pounds. A Jersey cow weighs between 700 and 1,000 pounds.
  • The cow must be a mother before she will produce milk. A newborn Holstein calf weighs about 100 pounds and can walk within one hour after birth!
  • Milk cows usually have their ears pierced with I.D. tags. Each cow has a different number that allows the dairy farmer to track her activities by computer. The cow's milk weight is recorded in the computer as well as any medicines she receives.
  • Two ingredients found in milk make it extra healthy: Calcium, a major nutrient for humans that is necessary for strong bones and teeth and Vitamin D, a nutrient required by humans to produce healthy bones.
