Bayfront Center for Maritime Studies

Earnesto the firefly here! This week we went to the Bayfront Center for Maritime Studies. That is the building directly behind Blasco Library. What a neat place to visit! Mr. Rick Eisen showed us through the building. In the lobby he showed us boats that run on ICE of all things!

We then went into their workshop and saw several very old canoes being refurbished. Each child got to have the chance to saw through a piece of wood, tighten and untighten a screw with an automatic screw driver and learn to tie knots just like a sailor!

I think the best part was the steam box. Here, they steam thin pieces of wood to wrap around the boat. The children donned gloves and put three steamed "ribs" over a boat and clipped them in place.
The Bayfront Center for Maritime studies takes older kids through a program where they actually learn to build canoes. They treated the Explorers wonderfully and gave them a day to remember!
